Our very first overseas off-road adventure was held from 30th April till 2nd May 1999, in conjunction with the Malaysia’s Johor 4WD Club. We saw some 60 units of various makes of true 4x4 (armed with winches, snatch ropes, spades, chainsaws and handful of well-versed mechanics) from our neighbour
4 Pajero Mini VRII, 1 Suzuki Vitara and a Jimny Wide, 1 Honda CRV and a classic Land Rover’s Series III was from the Singapore’s entourage. Participants from both countries were surprised with one another’s vehicles, they were curious about the performance of the Pajero Minis, Jimny Wide as well as the CRV as never before these vehicles were taken for off-roading in their playground. As for us, spotting almost 80% of gigantic true four wheels drive signalled that the trip would be a nice "surprise".

Along the way we encountered a series of mud holes, bridge crossings, uphill and downhill spiral rides as well as muddy and rocky terrain during daytime and in the night, makes us realised the difference between off-tarmac and off-roading. Not up to our expectation, certain parts of the treks were once used for the Rainforest Challenge 98, hence the term "Hardcore" kept on bugging our minds. During the first 50km of off-roading in the night makes us questioned ourselves "Will we ever see the daylights again?" As we managed one obstacle after another, rapidly our confidence of clearing the next one was consolidated. The face of the watch reads one in the morning when we arrived at the first campsite at Bekok Waterfall. Is been a hard day’s night — but we looked forward to the next day.

An estimated distance of 100km of off-roading in the jungle begins at 0930 HRS, but this time we have learnt to expect the unexpected terrain towards the 2nd campsite in Sungai Rompin. More obstacles to overcome, more pushing to be done and most importantly, more screaming of joy after conquering the booby traps created by mother’s nature. Off-roading is healthy challenge between human’s wits and machines against the environment. Finally we have arrived at destination after 12 hours of long and tricky rides.
The last day, way out of the jungle was a smooth path to home. One great lesson learnt — positive thinking, strong teamwork and add a little bit of luck reflects the true spirits of 4x4.
NO ROAD IS ROUTE FOR OFF-ROADING!
